Movie Review

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (stylized as Pride + Prejudice + Zombies) is a 2016 British-American horror film based on the 2009 novel of the same name by Seth Grahame-Smith that parodies the 1813 novel Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. The film is directed by Burr Steers, who wrote the adapted screenplay, and stars Lily James, Sam Riley, Jack Huston, Bella Heathcote, Douglas Booth, Matt Smith, Charles Dance and Lena Headey.

Well after reviewing the book, I was very much looking forward to the movie adaptation, anticipating action, gore and some pretty cool special effects.

I can’t tell you how disappointed I was with the film. All of the ingredients were laid out to make a fantastic screenplay and yet it was one of the worst movies I have seen in years. Special effects?  Please! Just terrible CGI and equally terrible acting. The only redeeming part of PP&Z  was Miss Elizabeth Bennet played by Lily James. A portrayal I think even Jane Austen would have approved of. I would go as far to say that the Bennet sisters as a whole were pretty decent and their fight scenes were a lot of fun to watch.

Sam Riley did an okay job with Mr. Darcy’s character. Stoic and ill tempered as he should have been but what was with his voice? I’m not familiar with Riley’s resume but he seemed to put on this horrible raspy voice that would make Colin Firth cringe. It reminded me of Christian Bale from The Dark Night but he had a chance to redeem himself in the sequel. I dare say this current incarnation of Mr. Darcy will not be so lucky.

Let’s just say the cast was pretty but that’s about it. What should have been campy turned out bland and boring. The effects were awful and the zombies, ugh don’t even get me started on the zombies. I realize I’m being very harsh but I take my zombie movies very seriously and Austen even more so.

I realize there may be a few people that like it but this girl was thoroughly disappointed and gives it a big fat F!
