It feels good to be bad!
What happens when you assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated super villains, give them the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal and then send them on a mission to defeat an enemy worse than they are? Hopefully a kick-ass movie!
Suicide Squad, written and directed by David Ayer, features an all-star cast including but not limited to; Will Smith, Jared Leto and Margot Robbie. As much as it pains me to put this in print, even Ben Affleck will be making an appearance as Bruce Wayne/ Batman.
I think the latter is what I fear the most, and not because Ben Affleck can’t act. In fact, I think he is a decent actor and a talented director. What worries me, is his reprisal of his Batman role. I think we can all agree that it wasn’t his best performance. I thought Batman vs. Superman was so horrible, I couldn’t bring myself to officially review it.
That is my biggest fear! Like Batman vs Superman, Suicide Squad has had a huge media blitz. You can’t read anything online without seeing something about it. Constant marketing and publicity has raised our expectations into the stratosphere and fanboys are frothing at the mouth.
That was the first nail in the coffin, for Batman vs Superman, so I really hope history doesn’t repeat itself. The marketing is also incredibly Harley and Joker-centric which is understandable as they are iconic characters in the DC universe, but what if these talented actors can’t live up to our impossible standards? Already, fans have been angry over so many things such as Harley’s wardrobe, her accent or lack of one, and the haters have been fuming over Joker being so unlike what we are used to. We have already seen a different kind of Joker…ahem, Heath Ledger? And he was incredible in the Dark Knight trilogy.
Personally I think Jared Leto is going to be an amazing Joker. He is a talented method actor, and I think he will bring a whole new kind of crazy to this character. You can see that Ayer and company are trying to create a younger, grittier couple that will hopefully attract a new generation of fans.
I can’t wait!
As the big day draws near, I find myself getting more excited. I will keep an open mind and hope the media machine hasn’t ruined this film before it has a chance to be seen. You can’t please everyone, but I do hope that Suicide Squad lives up to some of the hype. Fingers crossed!
