This movie got so much hate, and why? Because it was a reboot with women replacing iconic male characters. Well if the actors that played those iconic male roles, not only approve, but all have a role in the making of this film…why can’t the fans approve?
Dan Aykroyd is listed in the writing credits and has a very funny cameo, as does Bill Murray. If that isn’t a good enough endorsement then are the haters and trolls really even fans? I would argue not, because it was a decent flick that honored the original franchise.
What it’s about…
Following a ghost invasion of Manhattan, paranormal scientists, Erin Gilbert and Abby Yates, band together with nuclear engineer Jillian Holtzmann and subway worker Patty Tolan, to stop the otherworldly threat.
Starring: Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones
I liked it! It wasn’t the best movie I have ever seen, but by no means was it the the worst. How can a movie starring Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy not be funny? Their origin story was cute and I liked how some of the scenes are explained in lay terms for those of us who don’t have degrees from MIT. The Holtzmann character is clearly the person that we are supposed to idolize and she does a fairly good job earning our devotion. Obviously it helped to have some eye-candy manning the front desk (Chris Hemsworth) and even his dumb blonde routine was kind of funny.
Yes it was cheesy. No it wasn’t realistic. And the villain was kind of lame. Couldn’t we say the very same for the original and it’s two equally cheddar smelling sequels? Yes we can and you know what? We still loved them!
This review is a little brief but Ghostbusters 2016 wears its heart on its sleeve. The story treads in the shallow end but it is still worth watching.
My recommendation… Ignore everything the internet trolls say and give it a shot. Who knows? You may be pleasantly surprised just as I was.
