Suicide Squad: No Spoilers!

Movie Review

Suicide Squad-Movie Review-Reads & Reels

Suicide Squad is by far the best movie I’ve seen all summer! Maybe even all year, Star Wars: The Force Awakens being the only exception.

The Movie

The Suicide Squad is an anti-hero strike team of incarcerated super villains.  Acting as deniable, covert assets of the US. government, it undertakes a high risk black-op mission in exchange for reduced prison sentences.  The squad operates out of Belle Reve Penitentiary that houses the worst of the worst, and are under the directorship of Amanda Waller.  Needless to say, chaos ensues.

My Thoughts

I haven’t had so much fun seeing a movie in months.  Quite frankly I am shocked that Suicide Squad is getting anything other than glowing reviews.  Critics are harsh however, and if you are staunch in your belief in canon then maybe that is the reason.  Having never read the comics, I had no preconceived notions about what this movie should be like.  I did have expectations though, and the movie exceeded all of them.

Let’s start with the cast, because if we’re being honest, the success of this highly anticipated movie was riding heavily on the actors’ ability to be the villains we know and love.  Deadshot:  I will address the biggest issue with casting Will Smith, he’s black! And boy did that have the fanboys in a tizzy!  I don’t care if Deadshot is supposed to be green, Will Smith killed it!  Admittedly I am a fan, but he owned this role.

Margot Robbie was so amazing as beloved Harley Quinn, it will be impossible to have anyone else play her role.  Not only is she adorable, but she embodies everything that is Harley right down to her Brooklyn accent.  You could put her psychotic, hilarious and bad ass self in a potato sack and she would still be Harley Quinn.  Don’t worry the jester suit makes an appearance but I promise you will not care.

Honestly the entire cast was incredible but I know you’re waiting to hear about Jared Leto’s Joker-  I liked him! I am not going to comment on how often he appears or in what capacity.  He was creepy as f@#$, sociopathic in the extreme and made a good puddin’ to Harley.  I liked Heath Ledger’s portrayal more, but for the most part I enjoyed Leto’s younger Mr. J.

The origin stories are mostly canon but there are a few reimagined stories as well.  That being said, I think the new origin stories work.  The special effects are incredible and there are a few surprise cameos that actually make sense (unlike Batman vs. Superman).  Ben Affleck as you probably know, makes an appearance as Batman and Suicide Squad makes him look good. That is how fantastic it is.

For me, the score is also a key ingredient.  It creates the atmosphere and enhances a scene. Great music helps me get lost in the movie, and it has to be said… Suicide Squad has a kick-ass soundtrack.

I could list the virtues of this masterful film for days.  I had high hopes for it and was terrified that the hype and mass marketing was going to send it to its grave before its release date.  Well breathe easy my friends because Suicide Squad beat the naysayers in the head with the very shovel meant to dig its hole and those that ignored the backlash, will not be disappointed.  Seriously…What are you waiting for?  Go see it already!

Rating… A+

  2. Agreed on all accounts except on Leto. He was barely OK to me and that is disappointing when you know that the Joker and Harley are my favorite DC characters.

Margot gets a 9/10 for me. While she did have a slight accent, it was the full on Harley voice which would have made it a 10/10.

There will always be fans who dislike everything, I’m sure E.T. would have gotten some hate back in the day if twitter existed. I also recommend watching it and enjoying it for what it is.
