I may be biased as I am a huge Tim Burton fan, but Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children was delightful! You know, in a dark way. (NO SPOILERS)
Based on the novel of the same name by Ransom Riggs, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children is a dark but whimsical fantasy that may just be the best work Tim Burton has done in years.
After a horrific tragedy befalls his family, Jacob discovers clues to a mystery that stretches across time. He discovers Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. Danger lurks as he gets to know more about the home’s residents and their special abilities.

How was it?
This was one of those rare times when I saw the movie before reading the book and I’m sure had it been the other way around, my review might have been a little different. But I did see it first and I really enjoyed it. With the last few Tim Burton flicks being painfully predictable, Miss Peregrine’s Home…was a breath of fresh air. While maintaining the characteristics he is known for, he still created something refreshing and different. Something that we haven’t experienced since the early years of his career
Eva Green is superb as Miss Peregrine. Stunning, classy and tough as nails. Asa Butterfield is perfectly awkward and gawky and makes a likeable character, but the person that stands out the most, is new-comer Ella Purnell. I absolutely loved her. Her role as Emma Bloom is interesting and endearing. She really is one of the best parts of the movie.
As a whole, the film was very entertaining. The sets were particularly amazing and everything was wonderfully vivid and surreal. I originally thought that it was going to be the literary version of Xavier’s School for the Gifted (X-Men) and I couldn’t have been more wrong. I highly recommend Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, but strongly advise not watching it with your kids. It’s not really a family movie unless of course your kids are over 13. It’s pretty creepy at times.
On a personal note, it is really nice to see that one of my favourite directors got “his groove back” and I promise I will read the book as soon as possible.
