I have been sitting on this one for a little while now, because frankly it rendered me speechless. No easy feat, just ask my husband.

I expected it to be raunchy and vulgar. I expected to hear F bombs dropped every five seconds. I was even looking forward to the gross out humor. However, I could not have expected any of the things I wish my eyes could unsee. They have not invented a rating for a movie like this yet. An R rating just won’t do. I don’t know maybe a triple R rating?

Fortified by wine and a deep breath, I am ready to do this…

Sausage Party

The products at Shopwell’s Grocery Store are made to believe in a code that helps them live happy lives until it’s time for them to leave the comfort of the supermarket and head for the great beyond.

However, after a botched trip to the great beyond leaves one sausage named Frank and his companion Bun stranded, Frank goes to great lengths (Smirk) to return to his package and make another trip to the great beyond.

But as Frank’s journey takes him from one end of the supermarket to the other, Frank’s quest to discover the truth about his existence as a sausage turns incredibly dark. Can he expose the truth to the rest of the supermarket and get his fellow products to rebel against their human masters?

My Thoughts…

Too much? Well that’s what I thought. Too much! Too much vulgarity, too many obscenities…just too much of everything! The hints of dirty humor in the trailers were funny, even the concept in general was really funny. But that was the problem. Seeing hints of everything was just the right amount. When you watch 89 minutes of non-stop RRR rated stuff, it stops being funny.

Let’s talk about some of the good things about Sausage Party. Seth Rogan, I love the guy! Even more so when he is working with Jonah Hill. Also the concept of the movie is fantastic. Original, creative and really weird, but in a good way.

Additionally the introduction of some very unique characters throughout the movie was wonderful–over the top and offensive, but great. For example Salma Hayek plays a horny taco shell and she is hilarious. Another plus, the animation is incredible! Vivid, expressive and very realistic, well you know, for food.

I think I covered the bad already, though I’m sure there are lot’s of fans out there. I honestly thought I would be one of them. Unfortunately the last scene of the movie is burned onto my retinas forever and colours my opinion of the film. And since I give spoiler free reviews, you are just going to have to watch it…at your own risk.

There I did it. Now I need another glass of wine!

  1. I get the sense that Seth Rogan and company are allowed to just run wild on projects like these and, as such, they end up being a little editing/guidance shy of a solid film. While nowhere near as…unsettling as ‘Sausage Party,’ I felt similarly with ‘This Is The End.’ I thought it was funny, but not as funny as it could have been given the premise and the actors involved. I agree with you too; there were certainly some fun, funny, interesting moments but they ended up dwarfed by whatever the $#%@ the rest of that movie was. Yikes!

      1. I KNOW!! Bah. Even the larger “point” they were trying to make (which I think was) about not judging someone for their beliefs but also not being blind and irrational in what you do believe (if that’s what they were trying to say…) was lost in all the horrendous absurdity. You can’t expect to be taken seriously, start a conversation, or even really make people laugh and think with a story like that. It’s hard to be a fan indeed.

  2. When I watched it, it was like seeing a car wreck. I know I shouldn’t gawk yet I can’t look away.

    I hand it to Seth that he made something no one has really ever seen before, i.e. an R (and really should have been X) cartoon/parody of the Pixar movies. And there were some scenes that made me laugh.

    And there probably even are some concepts that could be turned into cartoons that adults would be into and because it is animated, more can be done than with live action.

    But all that said, I hope he doesn’t do another one. I don’t think there’s a large chorus crying out for dirty cartoon movies. Not everyone is media savvy and the theaters end up having to put up signs declaring, “Hey, even though this movie is a cartoon, you should not take your kid to it. We know. Yeah. Its a cartoon. Yes. Cartoons are usually for kids. But not this one. No I know the talking food looks adorable but trust me they’re going to say and do horrible things.”
