Stunning effects, excellent acting and an intelligent script make for a scintillating, thought-provoking movie experience.
Recently I had the opportunity to watch and review the The Martian. I enjoyed it immensely and rated it accordingly. Like The Martian, Arrival is an intelligent sci-fi. Meaning it dazzles you with science, breath-taking SFX and Oscar-worthy performances. There are no big action sequences or blow ’em up battles between the alien visitors and human beings. And that’s okay because Arrival doesn’t need it.
When mysterious UFOs touch down across the globe, an elite team – led by expert linguist Louise Banks – is brought together to investigate. As mankind teeters on the verge of global war, Banks and the team race against time for answers – and to find them, she will take a chance that could threaten her life, and quite possibly humanity.

Excellent film! Hubby and I had the rare opportunity to go see a “grown-up” movie yesterday. It was really tough to choose, particularly since Fantastic Beasts is also playing. But we picked Arrival, looking for something more cerebral. I’m so happy with our choice. Arrival is not only a feast for your imagination but also for your brain. It’s not often that I am forced to contemplate such lofty ideas and scenarios. Not with Wheels On the Bus running on repeat most of the time.
If you are looking for an alien flick with lots of fire power, or for Will Smith to save the world from annihilation, then this is not the movie for you. If anything the villains in this piece are human beings… don’t worry, I won’t say more than that. It’s a think piece, and a very good one at that.
Amy Adams is on top of her game and it was really great to see Jeremy Renner step out of his tough guy shoes and try on something different for a change. And guess what? He has range! They are great together and I hope they consider teaming up again in future projects. That said, Amy Adams is the star of the show.
Wow! The special effects just blew me away. I’d have to say that this concept of an alien is my favourite to date. The vistas are pretty spectacular as well. Truly inspired but you’ll have to take my word for it because of my “No Spoilers” rule.
As a whole, Arrival was intelligent, well executed, inspiring and entertaining. You will just have to see it to appreciate the nuances that make this movie so special.
