Movie Review

Have I ever mentioned that Alice is my hero? Or that I am a HUGE fan of anything Resident Evil?

It’s no secret that I love zombies, so this franchise holds a very special place in my heart and I am fiercely protective of it. I also love the games or at least the first six games ( I have reservations about Resident Evil 7 because of the first-person shooter POV). As you can imagine I was beyond excited to see “The Final Chapter” last night, and also a little sad.

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2017)

Picking up immediately after the events in Resident Evil: Retribution (2012), Alice (Milla Jovovich) is the only survivor of what was meant to be humanity’s final stand against the undead. Now, she must return to where the nightmare began – The Hive in Raccoon City, where the Umbrella Corporation is gathering its forces for a final strike against the only remaining survivors of the apocalypse.

Starring: Milla Jovovich, Iain Glen and Ali Larter

Director: Paul W.S. Anderson

Rating/ Runtime: R- 1hr 46

My Thoughts…

As I was saying, excited and sad. Excited because it’s another installment and it’s been 4 years, and sad because I can’t believe this is the end. I know they can’t make movies forever and I wouldn’t want them to but I will miss the thrilling anticipation of a sparkling new installment.

Getting back to this one, I really liked it. I am still undecided as to whether there were other installments I enjoyed more. I think I will be thinking about that for a while. Hubby and I have already planned a Resident Evil marathon (long overdue) to help decide.

The action was explosive! Milla never ceases to amaze me! She does her own stunts and though I am aware there is plenty of “movie magic” involved, she is just a marvel. I have seen her in other films of course, but she will always be Alice to me and I every time I watch her I get a little bit of a girl-crush. The rest of the cast not including “Wesker, Issacs, and Claire” were okay. That was one of the few things I wasn’t thrilled about. Obviously some of the best Resident Evil characters died in other movies but it’s hard to believe that Leon, Chris Redfield, Ada Wong and Jill Valentine were all killed “at humanity’s last stand” or maybe I just wish some of these characters were with Alice at the end. In the games Claire Redfield is bad ass, but I have never warmed to Ali Larter’s portrayal. I guess I thought Alice deserved more at the end.

I loved that the story ends at Raccoon City where it all began, the SFX and cinematics are stellar and it is non-stop action from start to finish. The best part? Everything and I do mean every little detail is explained. There are no loose ends or questions left unanswered but there are a few things that you will want to re-visit.

For the first time ever, my rating is going to be a range because I still need to process lol. Crazy right?

Rating… B+ to A-
