Kong: Skull Island (2017)

Movie Review

Kong Skull Island

I had zero expectations when I went to see Kong: Skull Island…

All I knew is that there was quite a lot of positive feedback during production and that it had a wicked cast. Having seen it this weekend, I can honestly say that this is the BEST movie I’ve seen in a very long time! Yes, even better than the new Star Wars installments! Shocked? So was my husband and he bleeds midi-chlorians, but he felt the same way.

Kong: Skull Island (2017)

A diverse team of scientists, soldiers and adventurers unites to explore a mythical, uncharted island in the Pacific, as dangerous as it is beautiful. Cut off from everything they know, the team ventures into the domain of the mighty Kong, igniting the ultimate battle between man and nature. As their mission of discovery becomes one of survival, they must fight to escape a primal Eden in which humanity does not belong.

My Thoughts…

WOW! What an amazing cinematic experience! As I said, I didn’t really have any expectations but I did presume it would be entertaining. It was so much more! Forget every other King Kong movie that you have ever seen. The only thing common about those flicks and this one is that there is a giant gorilla on an unexplored island. That’s it!

The first thing that I loved about Kong, is that it takes place right after the Viet Nam War ends. Such an important time in American history; the Cold War, Viet Nam, space exploration, dawn of computers, enormous political movements…the list goes on and on. The tone, cinematography, wardrobe and music are completely in sync with the time period and it was just fantastic to watch. The entire movie has this intense Apocalypse Now kind of feel and I absolutely loved it.

The special effects (CGI inc.), cinematography and cast is phenomenal! Coming from a true lover of film, this is huge praise. Kong is beautifully made. Every nuance of the film is brilliantly executed and I can’t tell you how wonderful it is to see. From Brie Larson to John Goodman, the acting is just fabulous.

I absolutely loved Kong: Skull Island and I can’t rave about it enough. The soundtrack kicks ass and every time you expect something to happen, something completely different happens.There is only one tiny thing that I thought was a bit silly, a scene with Tom Hiddleston and you will know it when you see it. I know this is just the start of a new Kong universe but as a standalone, Kong raises the bar.

Rating… A++

  1. I would have overlooked this film at first myself, thinking it would just be CGI-spectacle. However my local theatre has recently dropped prices (from $9.50 a ticket to $5.99!!!) so I’m hitting a lot more movies. I was thinking this would be a good one to see and now I am ABSOLUTELY going to check it out. WOW!!! I’m all excited now. I might even go tonight (if the Snowpocalypse doesn’t blow up too strongly…).
