She Will Rise- Calvin Demmer- Short Story

I think Theresa has a new favourite…

Here I am reviewing two more of Calvin Demmer’s horror tales, proving that they can become an addiction. One is $0.99 on Amazon and the other one is free, so it’s a bargain to say the least. Demmer invests a lot into his stories—not only the effort he puts into crafting them, but the covers are rather eye-catching and his words are polished by an editor. I don’t usually mention this, but that really makes for a more enjoyable read, at least for me. I wish more authors would follow his lead on this. So, when you are investing in Demmer’s work, not only will you be entertained, but you are getting a lot of bang for your buck. And these two pieces are really outstanding.

She Will Rise

Luna Mendes has come home from college for Easter. She finds her mother bedridden, far more ill than she feared. Her stepfather hasn’t changed, though. And that is a problem. Before the weekend is out, something will rise against the darkness that has haunted her family.

My Thoughts…

For a short story, there is some really good characterization here. Demmer spends time making us hate Luna’s stepfather, which is one of the things that makes this tale work. There is also a slow reveal about some of the details regarding Luna, such as the fact that she’s lost a twin sister in an accident. In fact, Luna’s life seems to be marred by more than one tragedy, making us sympathize with her. I can’t give away too much more, since that will utterly ruin it for you. However, I will add that even if you guess what’s coming, you might be stunned by the humor at the end. This in another one of Demmer’s tales about dangerous women. Never mess with one, especially if she has adopted a strict code to live by!

Faster

Brock Johnson made a deal to return home from the war—alive. It’s a contract that follows him throughout his days, a contract he can’t escape. Or can he? One night on the road, he must decide whether to keep running or surrender. . . Either choice has its price.

My Thoughts…

This is one of my favorite stories of Demmer’s, so much so that I wish he’d turn it into a much longer piece. There is a lot to love. We get dropped right into the action, and true to the author’s style, he gradually reveals important details along the way. In the opening scene, we don’t know who is going to be the malevolent one—the middle-aged driver, or the young female hitchhiker. Based on his other femme fatale stories, I was expecting the woman to be the killer (sorry about the minor spoiler). Things get deadly within a short span of time as the driver makes his move. But there’s more. I was hooked, wanting to know what his motivations were and what exactly was happening. There are many twists and turns, and I was pleasantly surprised that I wasn’t able to guess what Demmer had up his sleeve. Again, I don’t want to spoil the speedy ride for you, but I highly recommend this read. And it’s free, so you have no excuse not to pick it up! Do it faster…

  1. Sounds good.. I’ve read some of Demmer’s stories before and have quite a few more lined up on my devices to read! 🙂 He certainly does have a style and the stories I’ve read, he has managed to really add some substance to characters which must be a task and a half… considering some full novels have characters that are flatter than flat… Thanks for sharing your thoughts… I shall look forward to digging into those 🙂
