Famous By Default (Release Date: March 24, 2017)

By my family’s fame.
Dying to escape the limelight,
And finally, I do.

Being raised as a Jayne, I’m under constant scrutiny. The rock band my brothers formed makes it impossible to stay under the radar. Paparazzi, tabloids, rabid fans–you name it and I’ve got it. It all makes me sick. But getting shipped off to crazy Aunt Betty’s house in my senior year of high school isn’t any better. After all, there isn’t a stray kid or pet in the world that my aunt wouldn’t take in.

Then I meet her. She’s cautious, suspicious, and not interested in me at all. But that’s fine by me. Sivan Holt may be beautiful and intelligent, but she’s nothing I’m looking for.

In my past.
Struggling to feel settled.
And finally, I do.

Growing up in the foster care system, I longed for a sense of belonging. All I wanted was a place to call home.
At the age of seventeen, I’m finally starting to feel it here. Home.

When he comes along, it unsettles me. I don’t want him to ruin everything we’ve built–everything that matters. Jax Jayne is arrogant, privileged, and I want nothing to do with him. But those green eyes of his keep drawing me in. If I let down my walls, will it be my final undoing?

He smiled and winked before he left.

Why did that make my stomach do all sorts of flip flops? I smoothed my hair back, straightened my shoulders, and stood outside the stall to watch over Bailey and her new foal.

The birth was the coolest thing I’d ever seen. Jax blew me away. Betty was right, A natural.

Relax, Sivan. You can ignore Jax and those stupid feelings.

I wouldn’t let him get to me. I had willpower. So what if he was handsome and somewhat charming? He also wanted to be a vet and was good with animals. Ugh. I wished I could banish that last part from my brain.

A vet.

A comfortable warmth began to start before I could stop it.

No, he’d probably change his mind and join his brothers in the band. With his looks and personality, he’d be certain to be a big hit. He already was according to Regina, so the easy way would be to follow along in his brothers’ footsteps.

A follower? Not him. He was as stubborn as a glob of sticky gum in hair. That guy would not take no for an answer. I’d already seen him in action with Betty. He’d been able to get her to relax her sugar ban, something I never thought would happen. She didn’t know it, but he had her wrapped around his finger. He could sell beef patties to a vegetarian, I was sure.

I jumped back a foot and rammed my elbow into the wood enclosure. “Ouch. Don’t sneak up on me.”

Jax held both hands up and laughed. “I didn’t. You seemed like you were in a different world. What were you thinking about?”

You. “Nothing.”
He pointed to Bailey and her newborn. “That was spectacular, don’t you think?”

“Yeah.” The best thing I’d ever seen.

“I’ve never felt so, I don’t know…alive.” His eyes danced, and he grinned like he was the happiest person on earth. He took both my shoulders. “Wasn’t that amazing? Don’t you feel awesome?”

“Yes.” My breath left me. “I feel pretty great.”

He stopped suddenly. His gaze intense. “You know what would make this day perfect?”

“Hmm?” My emotions swirled in a pleasant haze.

His hands tightened on my shoulders. He glanced down at my lips.

What was he thinking?

He moved closer, his clean and woodsy body wash filled my senses. A fluttery, nervous sensation hit my stomach.

Danger! Alert!

His eyes had me locked in his gaze. So intense. I couldn’t look away. For the first time, I noticed his piercing green eyes had little flecks of grey and gold. Such beautiful—

Don’t look!

I moved back a foot. He moved forward and reached to touch a lock of my hair. “So soft.”

The big fat wall I’d built started to crumble a bit. I wanted to kiss him. I’d been staring at his lips since he arrived. It wouldn’t hurt, would it? Just one?

He leaned in, his lips just a breath away. “Say yes.”

I closed my eyes for a second.
