iBoy- Netflix- Maisie Williams- Review

This movie had such a cool premise, and it stars Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) so I had to watch it!

Unfortunately, it wasn’t as good as I had hoped. Not bad, but not great.

My Thoughts…

It wasn’t a bad movie, it just wasn’t as good as I had hoped it would be. One thing that I need from a good sci-fi, is plausibility. Not necessarily realism, but at least some sort of scientific explanation for whatever phenomena takes place. I kept waiting for the “explanation” in iBoy, but it never came. Even in Spider Man, we know that he gets his super powers as a result of a radioactive spider bite. So, I had to dock iBoy a few points for that.

Things I loved about the movie? First, the location– Gritty council flats in an urban area of England. It doesn’t specify which city the movie was filmed in, but I suppose we can assume London. In one part of the film, someone remarks about it being the “only” council flat, surrounded by wealth.

Additionally, the concept of the film was really interesting. Tom being an average teen, gaining the ability not only to avenge his friend, but also to clean up his home by removing the gang element. Not wholly original, but good nonetheless.

The acting was decent. It was nice to see Maisie Williams in another role and I really liked “Tom’s Nana”. The SFX were at times, a little hokey. Almost reminiscent of that movie Hackers, which for its time, was pretty cool. Not so much now.

As a whole, iBoy was an okay flick with a good amount of action. I’m just happy I didn’t spend money to watch it. If you’re at a loose end, give it a try. But if you don’t end up seeing it, you’re not missing much.

Rating… C

  1. I must admit I couldn’t get through this one, I was waiting for the explanation too but started to get a sinking feeling it wasn’t marching its way towards me! You’re so right about the setting though, it had a good bit of grit. And Miranda Richardson was wonderful, as always 😉
