The Hatching- Ezekiel Boone

After reading all the “Skitter” reviews lately, I was so excited to start this series!

But when I went to purchase both books, only this one was available on Kobo (Booooo!) and Netgalley will make me wait for eons, but I digress. I loved this book but when I got to the end, I became frantic! “Where was the rest of the bloody book??? And how am I reading the epilogue already?!!” As you can imagine, I was left bereft and wanting more. I though I purchased a sample by accident. Then I wondered if this was supposed to be a short story. WTF??? This is just not fair! I think The Hatching is the shortest “novel” I’ve ever read and now I think this was a brilliant tactic to leave readers drooling for more.

The Hatching (Release Date: July 5, 2016)

Deep in the jungle of Peru, where so much remains unknown, a black, skittering mass devours an American tourist whole. Thousands of miles away, an FBI agent investigates a fatal plane crash in Minneapolis and makes a gruesome discovery. Unusual seismic patterns register in a Kanpur, India earthquake lab, confounding the scientists there. During the same week, the Chinese government “accidentally” drops a nuclear bomb in an isolated region of its own country. As these incidents begin to sweep the globe, a mysterious package from South America arrives at a Washington, D.C. laboratory. Something wants out.

The world is on the brink of an apocalyptic disaster. An ancient species, long dormant, is now very much awake.

My Thoughts…

I wanted to give this book all kinds of stars! But, I feel like I was robbed! Full price on Kobo is $9.99 plus tax and I don’t feel like I got my money’s worth. I’m actually more than just a little annoyed, but if I’m going to be honest, this won’t stop me from wanting to read the follow-up novel, Skitter (The Hatching #2). I just hope it is a full-length novel.

Ok I’ve complained enough about what was wrong with this book. (Yes, I only had a problem with its length) Everything else was pretty damn good. It was fun, creepy and had non-stop action right from page one. I’m not afraid of spiders so I didn’t get the willies reading it or anything. I did however, think that this was a fantastic spin on the whole world-wide plague causing the apocalypse thing.

The writing was sound, the premise original and frankly, I’m a sucker for creature features, so I loved it. For the record: I’m still annoyed!

Rating… A (For being awesome)/ D (For being annoyingly short)

  2. I keep hearing about this series and although I’m shit scared of spiders, I keep thinking I SHOULD read it. Isn’t that the point in horror after all? To scare yourself silly? 😀 Awesome review!
