Chance at Redemption (Release Date: May 23, 2017)

Gwen Stevens had a privileged life until her father spoke three little words that turned her world upside down. “You’re cut off.”

Broke and desperate, Gwen is forced to accept a waitressing job, but this glimmer of hope has a price. As if being a cocktail waitress isn’t bad enough, she has to do it in a dive bar called The Den, and her bad luck doesn’t stop there. She also needs to deal with the new owner, a blue-eyed, self-righteous ass determined to make her life miserable.

Liam Sinclair walked away from the entitlement and obligation his family planned for him, vowing to make his own way in the world…

Adjusting to life as a new business owner, Liam has experienced more than his fair share of setbacks. When his only waitress breaks her leg, his sister takes it upon herself to hire a replacement—a spoiled, self-indulgent hothead with too much makeup and more than enough attitude. Gwen represents the world he’s trying to escape, a world of excess and greed that he was never cut out for.

Appearances can be deceiving, and first impressions aren’t always right…

Despite their apparent differences, the tension between them turns to a fiery passion that neither of them can resist. Together they find balance and learn to appreciate the simpler things in life. But Gwen soon discovers that old habits die hard, and one mistake is all it takes to ruin everything.

Forgiveness must be earned, but even a villain deserves a chance at redemption

Review…

Sometimes you start reading a book and you feel cradled, right from the get-go, in good feelings. Nothing bad is going to happen. You just know it. Or if anything bad does happen, it will quickly be resolved, and in a very satisfactory way, for everyone involved.

Chance at Redemption, by Samatha Harris is just such a book.

When it begins, Gwen, a spoiled princess, is in the process of being cut off by her father. She’s been indulged her whole life, and is trying hard not to pitch a fit at the thought of no longer having all her needs met, of having every whim fulfilled. She’s going to need a job, pronto.

Next, we cut to Liam, our hero, who also comes from money, but who is blazing his own trail by leaving his materialistic, socially climbing family behind, eschewing law school, and buying his own bar. His dependable waitress breaks her leg in an unfortunate accident, leaving him shorthanded.

See where this is headed?

So, through happenstance and good luck, Gwen lands her first real job ever that doesn’t involve waving sheaves of papers around, and shows up to work in tight jeans, hair extensions, and Louboutins.

She and Liam of course hate each other at first, but slowly grow to like, then respect, then become attracted to each other. Steamy, hot sex ensues, and romantic love is the ultimate end result. However, just because the reader knows where he or she is headed, doesn’t make the trip any less enjoyable.

Gwen goes through real changes as a person, slowly shedding the accoutrements of her old, shallow, superficial life as she learns to embrace what has real meaning to her and those she cares about.

Liam doesn’t really change much, as he begins as the hunky, brooding leading man and kind of remains that way throughout, but he does learn that maybe he has to trust Gwen, and give her a chance to speak, even if he doesn’t want to, as most men don’t.

This is a serial, not in the linear sense, but rather in the sense that it’s about a social group, focusing on different people within the group, so it might be even more interesting to readers who know about the others within this world, which this reader didn’t; they all seem to be nice, interesting characters, well worth getting to know, however.

My only editorial complaint regarding this book would be that perhaps one more proofreading pass would have been in order. There were numerous small errors with misplaced commas and verb tense agreements, and one egregious error with a misspelling of “Cannes”, which were a shame to find in an otherwise very entertaining and fun read.

Rating… B (3.5 *)
