Movie Review

Hey guys! It’s been a hell of a couple of weeks and we all needed a laugh…

So, as some of you may know, my 3-yr-old was very ill. In fact, her appendix ruptured and she’s (with us not leaving her side) been in the hospital for the last week on heavy-duty antibiotics. We are finally home, but it’s going to be a long recovery with surgery scheduled for her in the fall. Needless to say, we really needed to do something fun as a family.

Enter Gru and his minions.

Despicable Me 3 (Release Date: June 30, 2017)

Gru meets his long-lost charming, cheerful, and more successful twin brother Dru who wants to team up with him for one last criminal heist.

Starring:  Steve CarellKristen Wiig, and Trey Parker

Director(s):  Kyle Balda, and Pierre Coffin

Rating/ Runtime: PG/ 1 hr 30

My Thoughts…

Honestly, it was a little meh. I guess that’s not surprising considering it is the third one. The formula still works. Gru is funny, the children are adorable, especially Agnes, and the minions are…well… miniony.

The problem is that we’ve seen it all before, so while its charming and entertaining, it doesn’t have the magic of the original. The first half of the movie is still pretty good but it loses its momentum. I will say, that the “villain” in this one, is one of the best parts of the movie.

I usually let my daughter weigh in on these flicks and she didn’t have much to say this time. But her reaction spoke volumes for me. At the beginning, when the minions first appeared onscreen, she giggled like crazy (which warmed my weary heart), but she lost interest half way through.

I would say that this one is a “renter” if you know what I mean. Okay but definitely not Pixar’s finest.

Rating… C+

  1. Ack, it’s disappointing to hear this film is not what it could be, but nothing can match the original as far as I’m concerned. The original is one of my fave films.

I’m sorry to hear about your daughter. What a rip-off to have surgery hanging over your head until the fall. 😦 However, I hope you still have a wonderful summer.

  2. Definitely agree with you about this movie. The villain in DM3 was the best part. However, the movie is crammed with too many character (and their one-note sub plots). All in all, I liked it, but it wasn’t my favorite in the series (the first one is still my favorite).

  3. I am an oddball as I actually never even made it through the first film. I hated it with a passion! It amazes me how popular these films are at all and that there are now three and spin offs! But as far as I can tell I’m alone in my opinion, well with my husband! 😂😂😂

I was dying to see this but think I’ll pass. We had to walk out in the middle of the second one when the big purple thing was on the warpath. Actually, I have no idea what it was doing I was asleep but my daughter was in an awful state – she was only 5 at the time. At least her dad was there while I was so bored and asleep lol. As we left she actually shouted at the usher that they shouldn’t show such terrible films to little kids lmao!!
I loved the first one though

  6. What a coincidence….have just come home from watching this one. I’ve never seen a Despicable Me before…maybe I should try the first one. My eight year old told me she almost fell asleep halfway through so I suspect she felt the same I did….and like you.
I’m really glad to hear your little one is on the mend…I was worried about you while we were Tweeting the other day but didn’t want to bother you. It is the worst thing seeing your child being sick and not being able to take that pain away from them. Take one day at a time.

    1. Thank you so much! Yes she is doing much better but having surgery looming in the fall has put a damper on the summer. Also we can’t travel at all just in case. It’s nerve wracking thinking she could have a reoccurrence of appendicitis while waiting for surgery. Like she has a time bomb inside her. 😕
Didn’t think this could happen to such a little one but it’s more common than you think.

As for Despicable Me? Amazing movie! You have to see it!

I can’t wait to see it, but may wait for DVD. I was worried it might not match up to the others. I loved the first one the most. Sometimes I wish they’d just stick with one or two and leave it at that. 😉 Great post! ❤
