OMG! What a huge disappointment! And the worst part? I’ll still need to watch the second season to find out what happens.
That’s even if there will be a second season. Judging by ratings, I would say no.
The Mist: TV Series (2017)
After an eerie mist rolls into a small town, the residents must battle the mysterious mist and its threats, fighting to maintain their morality and sanity.
Creator: Christian Torpe
Starring: Morgan Spector, Alyssa Sutherland, and Gus Birney
*Based on the horror novella of the same name by Stephen King
I don’t know if you guys have read “The Mist” but if you’re a fan of horror, you probably have. If you’re a fan of Stephen King, then you most probably should.
It’s a fantastic story about monsters from another dimension wreaking havoc on a small town. That’s the obvious plot anyway. I would say the real story is about human nature and what happens when you cram dozens of small-town folks into a grocery store, all with very different personalities and values. Then watch them deteriorate into vicious animals under attack. It’s brilliant!
In 2007, a film adaptation was released and I really liked it. It didn’t deviate from the book too much with the exception of the ending, which was far more heartbreaking. All in all, I would say it was a good rendition of the original story. So, when I heard there was a TV series in the works? Man, I was pretty stoked. It was the perfect opportunity to flesh out the story even further and finally get answers to so many unanswered questions.
Unfortunately, the creator deviated so far from the original plot, I was left with more questions than before, the biggest being “What were they thinking?”
The Good
Introducing a teenaged daughter instead of a young son, and having the wife survive in the mall with her was an interesting switch and I liked it. Unfortunately, the “Husband” played by Morgan Spector, came across as weak and short a few brain cells. Harsh I know, but he’s really bad! Every judgement call or obvious misstep made me want to scream at my TV. I don’t know what was worse, the bad acting or bad writing probably a combination of both.
Having eyes all over the town was pretty cool! Concurrent storylines taking place in different locations was what I was hoping for as we only had a glimpse into the one store in both the book and movie.
New characters are introduced and some are a welcomed, while others are completely unnecessary.
The SFX are pretty decent for a TV show. I would guess that a decent budget was used and it shows.
The Bad
The acting!!! Omg, some of it was so horrible! Like the previously mentioned husband and some of the smaller roles were just awful! Also, the dialogue at some points was pretty cheesy too.
The writing was a problem for me as well. Mr. King actually has credit for several episodes which was really disappointing to discover, as the story deviates so far from the original plot. For example, the Mist was supposed to have come from a parallel dimension, carrying with it, all sorts of humongous and terrifying creatures. In the show, it would seem the Mist is like some sort of phantasm, plucking your worst fears and using them against you while it feasts on your soul or something. I just don’t get it.
Will I continue watching it? Probably. If only to find out what happens but as I mentioned before, the show is not doing well so I’m not very confident it will get a second season.
I’m very curious to hear your thoughts are on the show. Did you watch it? All of season 1 is on Netflix if you want to see for yourself. Maybe you will like it. If you’ve never read the book or seen the movie, there’s a small chance you may.
Anyway, let’s have a chat, shall we?
Oh make no mistake about it, this is a terrible show all around. Even if the acting was good (which it certainly is not) whoever wrote this should try a new line of work.
I’d give this a Z
PS: I angry tweeted because I was stunned at how bad it was!

Yes I agree. It was painfully bad!

Unpopular Opinion: So far(I’m on episode eight), I’ve quite enjoyed it. Not the best show I’ve watched by any means but it’s far from bad and I was genuinely interested to see what happened next.
I think it helps that I’ve never read the book or seen the film. It seems to me that a lot of people are judging it for what it isn’t, not what it is.
That’s my two cents anyways.

I think you’re absolutely right and it’s great to hear another opinion. I think that if there is anyone who will like this show, it will be folks like yourself that won’t be comparing it to the book.

Well, I’ve just seen episode eight(a.k.a. Everyone goes crazy for little to no goddamn reason) and although I still stand by what I said for episodes 1-7, it’s going to take some kind of writing miracle to turn the story around and make it believable again.
I can’t believe they just stomped all over some of my favourite characters in the series.

What kills me is that King has writing credits for several of the episodes! You would think that would guarantee decent storylines

First three episodes were painful to watch especially the acting.

Right?! What a let down. The entire season The husband is like “I have to get to my family!” Dude! You’ve gone everywhere but the mall. I realize they need to stretch it out but come on lol

Oh what a shame, I was looking forward to this too. Love the King short story and the excellent movie adaptation (especially the black and white version) and I personally prefer the movie’s downbeat ending. Ah well there’s always more Supergirl and Legends Of Tomorrow episodes to consume! 🙂

Lol that’s the spirit! Unfortunately the show just doesn’t hold a candle to th story or the movie.

Being a Stephen King fanatic, I still want to see this, but it’s not on the U.S. Netflix.😒

Yes as a fan I understand the compulsion. It originally aired on Spike TV. Do you guys have that network?

We don’t. We have Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime, so I’m hoping it will show up eventually on one of those.

It will. We usually get each other’s stuff eventually. Though I’m still waiting for AHS. I have to watch it when I’m visiting my in-laws

I forget, are you in the U.S.?

No, thankfully I’m Canadian. No offense but I wouldn’t want to reside there at the moment lol

We take everyone! Actually all joking aside, I know of many people with the mean and the funds who have moved here or defected lol

I swear, if Canada would take us I think my husband and I would be packing tomorrow! Unfortunately we’re both disabled and I don’t think we meet the emigration requirements.😔

That’s too bad – the original short story was one of my favs of King’s. Won’t be adding this to the queue!

Me too! So disappointing. Then again, I was disappointed by Under the Dome too. Maybe he should stick to movies and mini-series. Did you see Rose Red? Very creepy

I haven’t seen that one – didn’t even know about it, but will look into it.

I stumbled across this at the weekend and watched the first couple of episodes. It’s very doubtful I’ll watch any more. As you say the acting is awful and there wasn’t a single character I liked. I would kind of be happy if they were all bumped off just so it’d be over.
I really liked the film (haven’t read the book) and what worked best for me was actually the single location. I like not knowing although it would be difficult to draw this out for any length of time in a tv show.

Exactly! That’s what I was looking forward to. Seeing what other survivors were doing. As you said though, the acting is so bad. I had to finish it though. Much like the proverbial train wreck, I had to see what happened next lol

I’m afraid I started playing around on my phone while “watching” it so paid almost no attention to episode 2 and have no idea what happened. Don’t think I could stand watching it again.

Yeah you know it’s not interesting when you would rather browse on your phone. Hubby started angry tweeting about it lol
