Hey guys!
Wow, my apologies for being so late this week. I usually like this to be a morning chat with our coffees…
But I only just got home an hour ago. Mr. Shanannigans had a conference in a nearby city this week, so my daughter and I decided to hide in his suitcase and take advantage of his hotel’s amenities. It was lovely but I think we are all happy to be home. We have an insanely busy weekend ahead of us. Back to back birthday parties, turkey dinner at my aunt’s, swimming lessons, an empty fridge to fill… well you get the idea.
Last night as I was lazily perusing Pinterest in our California King (hotel perk), this movie was in my feed. I LOVED this book! It was beautifully written, and the story… ugh the story was so gut-wrenching. Every time I read it I’m torn between appreciating the beauty of the culture and yet also disgusted by this ancient tradition. Such a fabulous book!
I quite enjoyed the film as well. I know there was some controversy because the lead actress ( Ziyi Zhang) was actually Chinese, but how amazing was she in it? Not to mention, absolutely breath-taking. The whole cast was pretty epic in fact. Ken Watanabe and Michelle Yeoh were fantastic, especially Michelle. I think they are both superb actors and I always enjoy their movies.
You know, I think I may watch this tonight lol.
This Week: Memoirs of a Geisha (2005)
They are all so beautiful! And you should see some of the book covers that have been released over the last few years, stunning.
I really love “G” because it shows Zhang’s natural beauty, and her character’s pain is also all over her face but….
The Winner: “B”
It’s pretty but bold and it reminds you that this story was originally pulled from the pages of a book.
What do you think? Have you read the book or seen the movie?
Have a wonderful weekend my friends, and to my fellow Canadians, Happy Thanksgiving!
I think I have to go with G, for the reasons you sited. It’s an emotionally captivating shot. That being said, I’ve never seen this film. I read (and loved) the novel but I’ve yet to watch this adaptation. Normally I’ve seen the movie we’re choosing for so I feel I’m a bit out of my depth with this one! Great choices though, all around.

Thanks very much. It’s a wonderful movie but in this case the book is better. The woman depicted actually wrote her own memoirs because this book wad inaccurate. Even if you consider it fiction, it’s still a good story.

I used to have a DVD copy but I don’t think it survived the big purge we did when we move 2 yrs ago. I wanted to watch it again too lol

I think all but C are pretty epic. I get that B looks most like a book cover though, and it is art in itself. I also love the one with the actress on it and that sad quote. It’s such a beautiful quote.
Have you seen the movie? It’s wonderful. Have you read the book? Even better! But you need to read the real memoir by the actual Geisha: apparently it was so inaccurate that she wrote her own book! It was really good too.

I’ve seen it and read the book and I did hear something about the actual woman writing her own story. I’m sure it’s amazing. I’ll have to look for it

You should read it – it is just as good as Golden’s book and really different.
