Movie Review
Such a beautiful movie! I loved it! Too bad my daughter fell asleep lol.
We couldn’t wait to see this but didn’t have the chance when it was released. Once my baby was feeling up to it, we decided it would be the perfect thing to do together to celebrate her recovery.
Unfortunately, after a whole bunch of arcade games, popcorn and chocolate, she was just too tired to make it through the movie. It’s a shame because her parents LOVED it!

My Thoughts…
First, I need to applaud the writers for creating and authentically Mexican experience. It’s obvious that a ton of time and research went into this film and it really shows. My husband (to be) is Mexican and naturally, his culture is very important to him. Too often in movies, we only see the stereo typical stuff associated with Mexico (I’m sorry but this beautiful country is more than just tacos and tequila), and even the actors used to portray Mexican character are more often than not, NOT Mexican (Shocking I know ;))
Obviously this has been an issue in film making for ages and doesn’t apply to just this culture. Caucasians used in Japanese roles as a recent example.
In the case of “Coco”, Disney/ Pixar really made an effort to get some of the details right. Certain foods, music, colloquialisms and of course the holiday, Dia de los Muertos were used well and correctly. The result? An absolutely beautiful and nostalgic experience for hubby, and of course the rest of us.
“Coco” is vibrant, colourful and highly entertaining. For our family it was particularly evocative. Especially Miguel’s beloved grandmother Coco, who very much reminded us of someone special who passed on a few years back. I promise though, there are plenty of feels for everyone, even if you’re not Mexican.
The message in this film is very clear and that is that “family is everything” and for us, that hits close to home. We really loved it and will be adding it to our home collection (Yes I still purchase the odd blue-ray if it’s special enough) so that our daughter can actually watch it this time and who knows, maybe even her “too cool for school” older brother will watch it too.
Joking aside, it’s a great flick and I can’t recommend it enough! Bravo Disney.
Rating… A+

So glad she’s feeling better!
I’m really looking forward to this movie. Your review is very similar to a few others I’ve heard: a great movie that does an excellent job representing Mexican culture, or at least a part of it.
