Woo Whee!!! What a ride! When the lights went on at the end, the only thing I was thinking was “when can I see it again?!”

So, this may be blasphemous to original Star Wars fans everywhere, but I think I’m loving these movies more than the original franchise (*Ducking all manner of fruits and veggies).

Hear me out! Obviously I KNOW the OG movies ARE Star Wars! I get it and I’m not disputing it, but since I fall on the millennial side of the spectrum (borderline Gen-Xer) I don’t remember the first time I watched them nor was I really part of the phenomenon that IS Star Wars. Not since the beginning anyway.

Naturally, I have watched them a million time since and am a huge fan but these new installments strike a chord with me that the original movies didn’t, and I think that is the whole point.

Fans everywhere rejoiced when learning that there were to be a whole new generation of Star Wars movies. It’s become a new holiday tradition to see the newest installment for some people (my people), and it is welcoming a whole new generation to the Star War’s family!

So, how do you hook millions of young people who don’t know the ways of the force? You introduce new characters with new storylines of course! Fresh, young faces who younger people can relate to. Unfortunately for OG fans that means losing the old to make way for the new. While it can be hard for some of us (really hard) to say goodbye to characters who have been canonized forever, as a fan we must grow with the story, embrace the new characters, or we miss out. And clearly they are doing something right because these new movies are awesome! It also warms my heart to see little kids introduced to this incredible universe (mine included), and it’s because of these new characters and adventures that legions of new fans are being created.

Okay, on to the movie!

The Last Jedi (Release Date: December 2017)

Rey develops her newly discovered abilities with the guidance of Luke Skywalker, who is unsettled by the strength of her powers. Meanwhile, the Resistance prepares to do battle with the First Order.

My Thoughts…

Loved it!

I actually liked this one even more than “The Force Awakens”! So much action, fantastic performances, even a few laughs.

In the interest of keeping this review entirely spoiler free, it will be short and to the point (Ha! See what I did there?).

  • Kylo Ren’s character and story improves tenfold! (Clearly fans were heard)
  • Daisy Ridley’s portrayal as Rey is inspiring! As a woman and mother to a young girl, it is so incredible to see a woman be the hero of the tale (about time)! I’m so proud that my little girl gets to idolize and dress up as such a kick-ass chick!
  • Carrie Fisher’s performance is poignant and fierce! Yes it evokes so much more because of her passing but just speaking on her merit as an actor alone, she’s fabulous
  • I enjoyed Mark Hamill more in this film than any of the others (not a big fan of Luke Skywalker)
  • Our new generation of rebel heroes; Poe, Rey, and Fin are brave, loyal, and extremely likable.
  • BB-8 has a very prominent role, and I loved it lol!

Overall, we loved it! Was it perfect? of course not, what is? But it was exciting, well executed, full of feels and very entertaining. It has something for all Star Wars fans, old and new.

Put it this way, I’ve already purchased tickets to see it again over the holidays, that’s how much we enjoyed it 😉

Oh and about the Porgs? They’re adorable, not Jar Jar Binks, and add much-needed levity to some pretty intense moments (you’ll see what I mean).

  5. I’m SO excited to see it! I was born in 77, but I like these movies better too! I LOVE Rey. It’s my sons’ sixth birthday this Thursday and he’s chosen to see the movie on his birthday (his uncle shares his birthday). I went out last night and bought seven Star Wars t-shirts (shhhh it’s a surprise) for everyone to open before we go to the movie, all wearing them. Ha!! Thanks for the review!

    1. Oh you’re going to love this one! It’s the better than the force awakens and Rogue One (though that’s not part of the new franchise per say) my daughter dressed up a Rey complete with light sabre. It’s a big deal in our house lol. Have fun!

      1. Purists, eh? Haha, I’m not sure I’m a purist. I love the prequel trilogy, and a lot of purists hate them. But now everyone is getting super divided again. I swear, the Star Wars wars are more heated than the wars in Star Wars. (I fully admit that I just wanted to see how many times I could put “wars” into one sentence.)

  9. I just got home from seeing it and loved it too! I totally agree about Carrie Fisher. Some of her scenes were brilliant and poignant anyway, but her death added a whole other layer to them for fans that they could never have predicted.

    Like you said, it’s not perfect, but visually it’s incredible, the emotional stakes were so much higher than TFA, and there were more than a few unexpected surprises and bold moves, which I applaud them for.

      1. I totally agree! The main complaint a lot of people seemed to have with TFA was that it was too similar to the original and didn’t take enough risks to push things forward. They definitely can’t say that about this one, that’s for sure!

      3. As am I. Like you, I always knew of the Star Wars films (like the entire universe) but missed the bandwagon first time round and only really got into them recently by watching them all properly for the first time since I was little, so I don’t necessarily have the same level of nostalgia for the originals that people who grew up with them have, so can go into these new ones feeling much more open minded. Because of that, it’s easier to simply enjoy them for what they are, rather than try and compare every minute detail to the originals.

    1. Absolutely no way it is better than the OG movies…. so yeah, can’t agree on that.
    2. Agree it was better than Force Awakens, but there were some “meh, wish they hadn’t done that” moments in the movie.
    3. Listing Boyega above but not Carrie Fisher is just wrong. Correct order… “Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamil, Ridley”

    While I may not rate movies with letters, I do rate them by whether I will buy the blue-ray or not, and not only will I be watching this at the theater at least one more time, I will be buying the blue-ray.
