Movie Review
Hold on to your popcorn folks cause this is NOT the Lara Croft you’re used to!
Tomb Raider (Release Date: March 16th, 2018)
Lara Croft, the fiercely independent daughter of a missing adventurer, must push herself beyond her limits when she finds herself on the island where her father disappeared.
Stars: Alicia Vikander, Dominic West, Walton Goggins and Daniel Wu.
Director: Roar Uthaug
Rating/ Runtime: PG-13/ 1 hr 58
My Thoughts…
I love Tomb Raider, the video games anyway. I’ve been playing them for years, so when the Angelina Jolie franchise came out, I was super excited! Alas, the movies were entertaining but they did not embody the game’s vision. Not entirely anyway. Yes visually, Jolie was very striking as the buxom heroine but the movies lacked plausibility.
Enter Alica Vikander’s Tomb Raider! This movie if you’ll pardon the pun, is a game changer. Without giving away spoilers, Lara Croft inherits her incredible life of dangerous adventure in the most unexpected way. She comes by her strength and agility in a realistic way. She is NOT a superhero! She is strong, fit and incredibly brave, but she stumbles, she gets hurt. Read: plausibility!
I loved Vikander as Croft! She is a role model I can get behind, one I’m proud to introduce to my daughter!
The movie itself, was fun, entertaining, perfectly cast (Daniel Wu is wonderful), and I loved the slightly revised origin story (which I can’t say anything about because it will spoil it).
This one is worth seeing in the theater and I really hope it develops into a good, strong franchise. Go on guys, you’ll enjoy this flick!

I was so completely thrilled with this adaptation! As a fan of the games, I agree this was so much more viable. She was a credible Lara and embodied her character enough to have that necessary predictability!

So glad to see so much love for this movie!!! Video game movies usually really turn out bad on the big screen, and sometimes just acceptable. I definitely enjoyed the recently rebooted Tomb Raider games, and I’ll definitely look forward to trying the movie out (probably when it hits Netflix though!). Thanks for sharing!! 😀

Yes! I love the Resident Evil franchise and I didn’t mind Doom but like you said they usually flop. This one is a lot of fun 😊

I went in with no expectations and came out a fan of Alicia.
Look, I am very hard on reboots or new actors taking a role. Still think the best Batman ever was Michael Keaton, best joker is Jack Nicholson, and that there is no other Superman but Christopher Reeve. Thus I thought, Alicia you are not likely to convince me that YOU are Lara Croft.
Well, I was proven wrong and I loved being wrong. Alicia IS Lara Croft for me and I will be watching any/all movies she is willing to do with this franchise. Heck, I think I am going to go watch anything Alicia is in.
Is this the best movie I have ever seen? No, but it sure is a darn good movie and it was better than any DC/Marvel movies I have seen recently.
