Warning: Triggers, Sexual Assault, Bullying, Suicide, Assault, Addiction, Mature Subject Matter
Wow! Just wow! This is not Jay Asher’s story! Season 2 of this controversial show is a powerhouse for a multitude of reasons but most importantly, it continues to shine a light on very real, and very serious issues.
This season picks up after the tapes have been turned over to the authorities, Hannah’s parents, and the highschool’s administration, with the hope that the person(s) will be held accountable for Hannah Baker’s assault and subsequent suicide. Also, if you recall, Alex shoots himself at the end of season 2 but we don’t know if he survives or why he does it. Quite the doozy of a cliffhanger.
I’m not going to get into specifics about season 2 because of the risk of spoilers, but I will tell you why this season is so fantastic and why it may be even better than the first.
I was very skeptical about another season to be honest. I wasn’t sure how the creators could stretch it out into a series. Sure there were still many unanswered questions at the end of season 1 but enough for a whole tv series? Maybe not. But that’s what it is, a series. And after finishing season 2 last night, there is most definitely as third season coming. So yes there is that much more to the story and it’s explosive.
In addition to the new storyline (continuing storyline?), the cast continues to blow my mind! These kids are immensely talented and their talent is what makes this show so believable.
“Hannah” is back and she still plays a huge role in each episode. That said, this season is more about the other characters. She remains the catalyst but we learn so much more about the people she sent the tapes to. There are also new characters introduced and they are a welcomed addition with rich storylines that expand the show’s plot. Many of them also add much-needed insight to “Hannah’s” story which really belongs to all of them now.
Another huge difference between the two seasons, is how the creators handled the hot-button issues depicted in each episode. There was a lot of backlash last year because of the nature of the show. People were angry that teens were being exposed to such an uncensored depiction of taboo subjects like suicide, rape, and addiction. There were warnings and an after show but bottom line, some parents felt that this should not be on TV period. Personally, I disagreed as I believe these issues are important and should be in the spotlight no matter how difficult they are to watch.
This season the creators were very careful. There are specific warnings at the beginning of each episode and viewers are encouraged to watch with an adult, or if the viewer is experiencing similar issues, then an experienced professional who can navigate the landmines with them. Additionally, a website was created and viewers are encouraged to visit it if they need help or have questions.
It’s only my opinion, but I think they did a great job! Believe it or not, season 2 is vastly more troubling and even harder to watch. And if you couldn’t handle the first season, I warn you, this season will be impossible to view. Not because the issues are sensationalized but because there are twice as many brought under the microscope.
Anyway, I’m sure there are many reasons why a second season was released like ratings etc.., but ultimately I think this show was created to start a discussion. The issues covered by this show are so important and they should not be hidden under the rug or treated like a dirty secret. There is not a single episode that didn’t cause a visceral reaction in me and I think this show is a must watch! I can’t wait for season 3.
This is an A+ series!

Great review! 🙂 I agree, just because something is uncomfortable to discuss does not mean the conversation just shouldn’t happen. As sad as it is, these sorts of things are happening in the real world every single day. I think it’s important for people to be aware of that for a multitude of reasons.
My boyfriend and I just started watching season 2, so we’re only a few episodes in right now.

I agree. 🙂 Yeah, my boyfriend and I were both horrified during the last episode. Neither of us were expecting what happened to a certain character (remaining vague so I don’t spoil anything to anyone reading through your comments). It was intense to say the least. We really started to enjoy the second season about halfway through it. It was so interesting seeing things from other characters’ perspectives and learning more of what happened in the past. Crazy show, but definitely a good one. 🙂

Thank you for this review… I had lined up watching S2 for sure but until now wasn’t in a ‘rush’ to dive in.. you have definitely made me want to drop everything and get stuck in! I felt S1 dealt with such important issues in such realistic manner, I can only imagine what S2 has in store as you mention darker and harder to watch…

Still need to watch this, my daughter and my youngest son both have watched it so I kind of know what happens, because they discussed it over dinner… as a parent I don’t see the problem, it addresses real issues and if you have an open dialogue with your children then there should not be a problem… and unfortunately we cannot keep our children sheltered from reality….
Need to make some time for this this long weekend! Thank you for your review!💜

As a mother, I couldn’t agree more. I remember being a teen and even with the usual stuff they go through its tough. These issues are so important. I think every family with teens should be discussing it. I hope you enjoy and I think it’s wonderful that you guys we discussing it as a family.

That has been my key to success as a mother especially as a single mother, keeping those lines of communication open, don’t always like to hear everything that is going on in their lives, because I’m mom, but I’m glad they feel comfortable to tell me and talk to me and they have all turned into quite amazing young adults, my oldest is 21 and my youngest 15 and my middle is 20 can’t forget her, LOL
