Don’t you just love a good ghost story? Well gather round the fire kiddies, cause this one’s a ‘killer’!

The Second Wife (Release Date: July 8, 2018)

Emily Marchant died on Valentine’s Day. If only she’d stayed dead…

When Chrissie Marchant first sets eyes on Barton Grove, she feels as if the house doesn’t want her. But it’s her new husband’s home, so now it’s her home as well. Sumptuous and exquisitely appointed, the house is filled with treasures that had belonged to Joe’s first wife, the perfect Emily, whom the villagers still consider the real mistress of Barton Grove.

A stunning photograph of the first Mrs. Marchant hangs in the living room, an unblemished rose in her hand. There’s something unnerving and impossibly alive about that portrait, but it’s not the only piece of Emily still in the house. And as Chrissie’s marriage unravels around her, she learns that Emily never intended for Joe to take a second wife…

My Thoughts…

I really enjoy traditional ghost stories, especially when the ghost is a jealous, vindictive first wife.

The Second Wife is an expertly crafted ghost story about a young woman who falls in love with a handsome widower, only to quickly realize that she will never fill the dainty shoes of her new husband’s first wife. She is desperate to erase the overwhelming presence of her rival, but soon learns it’s not the memory of the woman she needs to worry about, but something far more sinister.

I just loved this toe-curling story. It’s very well-written with thoroughly developed characters, and it possesses the perfect amount of terror and suspense. I never once felt like the plot of the story was rushed or lacking which can happen with short stories, and I really enjoyed it. I would happily recommend this book to anyone who appreciates classic paranormal tales.

Rating… A+

About the Author

Hello, my name’s Catherine Cavendish and I write horror fiction – frequently with ghostly, supernatural, gothic and haunted house themes.

My novellas COLD REVENGE, MISS ABIGAIL’S ROOM, THE DEMONS OF CAMBIAN STREET, THE DEVIL INSIDE HER and THE SECOND WIFE have now been released in new editions by Crossroad Press.

Also out now- from Kensington-Lyrical – the second in a trilogy – WAKING THE ANCIENTS – set in Egypt and Vienna and featuring the sinister Dr. Emeryk Quintillus whose obsession has stayed with him past the grave. The first in the trilogy – WRATH OF THE ANCIENTS – is already available and the third – DAMNED BY THE ANCIENTS – is available for pre-order (out in October).

My novels THE DEVIL’S SERENADE and SAVING GRACE DEVINE have also been released in new editions by Crossroad Press, as have my novel of the Lancashire Witches – THE PENDLE CURSE – and my novellas, LINDEN MANOR and DARK AVENGING ANGEL.

I live with a long-suffering husband and a delightful black cat who has never forgotten that her species used to be worshipped in ancient Egypt. She sees no reason why that practice should not continue.

Our home is in a rambling building dating back to the mid 18th century, haunted by a friendly ghost, who announces her presence by footsteps, switching lights on and strange phenomena involving the washing machine and the TV.

When not slaving over a hot computer, I enjoy wandering around Neolithic stone circles and visiting old haunted houses.
