Hello November!

I survived Blogtober and only missed 3 days!!! Not a complete success, but I’m proud of myself because posting every single day is HARD!

I took a day off yesterday but I’ve read so many amazing books that I can’t help but post again so soon lol. Today’s is about a slow burning thriller with some of the most loathsome characters I have encountered in a while.

Closer (Release Date: October 24th, 2018)

I know my daughter better than I know myself and if there’s one thing I know for sure at this moment: it’s that Maisie is not ok.

My ex-husband Shaun and I are still friends.
We would do anything for our beautiful little girl, Maisie.
But now Shaun has moved in with Joanne and suddenly, Maisie has a brand new family.
And there’s something not quite right about it…I know Joanne isn’t everything she says she is. Yet no-one will listen.
I need to discover what she’s hiding.
Because if I don’t, my daughter will be in terrible danger.

The most gripping psychological thriller you’ll read this year from the Kindle top five bestselling author K.L. Slater. If you love The Girl on the Train or Gone Girl, you’ll be absolutely hooked.

My Thoughts…

Honestly, there really should be licensing requirements for parenting because these three characters should not have kids PERIOD! And you may think that the “evil soon-to-be step-mother is the worst of the lot, but it’s actually the father “Shaun”. His ineptitude goes far beyond not being able to see past his hormones. He truly is clueless to his daughter’s anguish, and it is beyond frustrating. If I was “Emma”, I would have grabbed him by his …um… ears, and forced him to take action, or never see his kid again.

Okay end of rant! You might be thinking by my loudly voiced opinion, that I didn’t like this book. On the contrary, I quite enjoyed it! I’m pretty sure it was the author’s intent to create characters that would drive readers nuts. It’s clever really, because you won’t be able to see what’s coming as you’re too busy yelling at your book.

Closer is a slow burner. Starting with Emma’s normal reservations about her ex-husband falling for her boss (Who does that?!), and then escalating into what appears to be full-fledged paranoia because someone is literally hurting her daughter. Of course being the ex-wife, means she’s just being crazy and jealous, even though there is overwhelming evidence that something is very wrong with Maisie. And despite the obvious proof, Shaun thinks everything is peachy keen (UGH!) and loves playing happy families with his new lover and her awful daughter.

Eventually the slow burner erupts and the story take a very thrilling and unexpected turn! Also, just when you think it’s all over the author delivers a gut-punch of a twist.

Great writing, horrible characters that almost deserve what’s coming to them (except Maisie of course), and a fantastic surprise ending, all add up to a pretty thrilling story.

This is my first book by this author and I’m definitely looking forward to reading more!

Rating… A
