Book Review
Happy hump day my bookish friends! Today I want to share with you, what is probably the most entertaining YA Fantasy, that I’ve read in a long time!
Guys, you know I’m super picky when it comes to Fantasy. I’m not particularly fond of epic Fantasy, or High Fantasy, but I do like the occasional Urban Fantasy, and anthing to do with Heaven and Hell, that sort of thing. So despite the ugly little beasty on the cover, I agreed to review this one because it sounded very interesting. I’m so glad I did!
The Devil’s Apprentice (The Great Devil War #1)
Publication Date: October 8th, 2018
Genre: YA Fantasy
Philip is a good boy, a really good boy, who accidentally gets sent to Hell to become the Devil’s heir. The Devil, Lucifer, is dying and desperately in need of a successor, but there’s been a mistake and Philip is the wrong boy. Philip is terrible at being bad, but Lucifer has no other choice than to begin the difficult task of training him in the ways of evil. Philip gets both friends and enemies in this odd, gloomy underworld—but who can he trust, when he discovers an evil-minded plot against the dark throne?
The Devil’s Apprentice is volume 1 in The Great Devil War series

My Thoughts…
I LOVED this book! It was highly entertaining, fun, and incredibly creative!
It’s been ages since I enjoyed a Fantasy this much! I honestly don’t have any constructive feedback because from the very first paragraph, I was in it! Totally, and completely absorbed in this fantastical world the author created. Isn’t that the best feeling, to get completely lost in a book?
That was probably my favourite part about this story, the world building. Anderson creates Hell down to the smallest detail, but it’s not at all what you think of. Yes there is fire and damnation, but there is also an entire community. A community who works, lives, shops, and even goes to school. One of the comparisons that came to mind while reading, was The Nightmare Before Christmas, in that, the horror was just a normal night in the city. Bad is good and good is bad. I won’t say more because it would spoil the magic for new readers.
Also it was funny! There is a whole cast of characters who join ‘Angelic’ Phillip on his journey, and each one is colourful, bizarre (in a good way), and really very witty. Lucifer and his cat Lucifax both have a very dry sense of humor about things and I really appreciated that. All such great characters.
Overall, this book is enjoyable, entertaining, and fun for all ages. Despite its subject matter, this book is appropriate for younger teens and up. If you are looking for a fun series to start, one that is unique and captivating, then I suggest you give this one a go!
