Everyone knows the movie adaptation of this Marvel comic sucked. BIG time…

But I had read a few reviews and it made me curious despite the fact that I wasn’t all that crazy about Jon Bernthal being cast as Frank Castle. I only know him as “Shane” from The Walking Dead, and he was a very unlikable character. Kind of a douche really, so I figured I wouldn’t like him in this either. I also had serious doubts that they could turn what had been a monumental flop as a movie, into a quality TV show.

Well, here I am declaring for all to read, “I WAS WRONG!”

I’ve only watched the first three episodes, but this show kicks ass (pun intended) and Jon Bernthal is completely redeemed in my eyes.

Here’s the Gist…

After the murder of his family, Marine veteran Frank Castle became a vigilante known as “The Punisher” with only one goal in mind – to avenge them. With his revenge now complete, Frank’s war-time past comes back to haunt him.

Stars:  Jon Bernthal, Amber Rose Revah, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach

Warning: It has a TV rating of MA but if it were a film, it would be rated a big fat R for seriously adult content and bloody violence.

The series starts with a first episode that is super intense and incredibly violent to show viewers that this is “The Punisher” and this series means business. The next two episodes develop other characters and layout the foundation of what the show will be about. Don’t get me wrong, there is still plenty of violence, but there is also a really good story, excellent new characters, depth and plenty of drama to showcase the actors’ chops.

My favourite part of this new adaptation is that it’s not the origin story we know about Frank Castle. That being, the Mob killed his family etc… There is a new origin story but it ties into Castle’s former military career and it’s way more relevant. Think, covert ops, conspiracies, and a whole lot of corruption. If you’re a member of the canon police, it may be a problem for you but I really like it and it works.

Jon is fantastic as Castle and the rest of the cast are equally impressive. I’m only a few episodes in, but so far this is an A+ series and totally binge-worthy.

    As a Punisher fan, what I really loved about this show is how they took the material completely seriously and didn’t try to turn it into a goofy gore-fest like “Punisher: War Zone”. The show’s violent, but not without purpose. And I don’t know if you’ve finished the show by now or not, but the villain of the show is also magnificent.

  3. The nonhubs and I are so far behind on the shows we watch together because of his travel, and I know this will be one he wants to watch, so I am trying to hold off. We still haven’t finished the second season of Stranger Things or caught up on AHS and TWD 😦

  5. Absolutely love this show!!! I was a huge believer that Bernthal would nail his role, and I was super happy that they decided to a show just for him. Finally something super good to compensate for all the crap we got from Hollywood! 😛 Totally agree with you too. The character development is awesome, and this origin story is definitely intriguing! Hope you enjoy it till the end. 😉

      1. I’ll try it out sometime soon.. I started watching The Shannara Chronicles on Netflix… well, when I say started I got about 20 minutes in and decided it was good but went to reading a book 😀 Have you seen the Shannara one? any thoughts if you have?

      3. Cool, I mst check out the write up! I watched about 5-6 episodes last night and while it’s a bit … hmm… in parts, it’s also quite watchable… I like that the guy is in it that played Crixus in Spartacus.. now that was a show and a half 😀

    My husband and I have been looking forward to this!! He already went ahead and watched Episode 1 without me, but i LOVED the movie and I cant wait to see how its one as a series. Great casting too!

        These men! lolol Ah, really? I loved Thomas Jane as Frank Castle, I thought he did such a great job. Really interested to see how Jon Bernthal does in the role.

  12. I plan on watching this as soon as I finish The Defenders (I’m way behind on my shows). I thought Bernthal did an excellent job as Frank Castle in season two of Daredevil. Your review makes me more excited to watch this!
