Reads & Reels is so happy to host Tiera Rice’s debut novel, Awakening. It is book #1 in her Bloodline series and it’s bloody good! (Pun intended)

I’m a sucker (sorry) for a good vampire book and I tend to be a bit of a snob when it comes to vamp lore. Awakening appeased my purist sensibilities while still being fresh and original.

My Thoughts…

Awakening does not read like a debut novel. The writing is rich in history and culture and the plot is enthralling. As I mentioned before, I’m a purist when it comes to vampire mythology and having the story take place in Romania made the story that much more appealing to me. I love how well researched this book was. Adding elements of historical fact and culture adds a much desired sense of realism to the story and for me that is important. It may be fantasy, but it still has to make a certain degree of sense to hold my interest.

Having two concurrent storylines is no easy feat, even for a veteran writer, but Rice pulls it off with ease. Flipping from modern New York to ancient Romania makes for interesting comparisons and I really enjoyed that.

Awakening was a pleasure to read. It was thrilling, suspenseful and the characters were wonderful. It is beautifully written and highly entertaining. I’m really looking forward to reading book #2. I hesitate to compare Rice’s writing style to another Rice, whose epic novels made me first fall in love with vampires, but it does have the same flavour. Give Tiera Rice a few more years to season her craft and you just never know.
